Groovy Tuesday New Song Idea: You Are My Shepherd

October 5, 2010

Here are the lyrics so far:
You are my shepherd and you lead me on
You are my shepherd and I shall not want
You are my shepherd, you restore my soul.
You are my shepherd when my heart’s at peace
You are my shepherd in the darkest place
You are my shepherd in the famine or the feast
And you fill me up
and you feed my soul
and you make my cup
to overflow….

It was good to hear a new song from the Lord, great melody, one comment, the words “you are” maybe used too much otherwise looking forward to hearing the chorus and hearing the full song, knowing you will do it for His glory.

  • Val

Lovely deep heart touching melody and with your chosen words has a way of drawing the listener into the presence of God. Look forward to hearing the chorus.

Lovely song!! it`s the kind of song in which I`d put a great instrumental part including a choir (a great one!!) . After the part of “to overflow” I`d hang on the chord of “restore my soul” to start that instrumental part with a long sustained sang note an octave higher, some kind of shout.

    I like it very much.
Maybe the chorus could say something about “the sheep hear His voice, the sheep hear His voice, the sheep hear His voice and find their home.” Maybe the next verse can start with “you are the gate…” from John 10. Just a couple of ideas that may work.

yeah, that needs to be re-thought again

I like the song. here are some further suggestions. you annointed me with rich oils
that cleansed my soul. you told me there are many houses in the heavens and you have set one aside for me. he tells me this in the presence of my enemies . so they could see what a loving God is He

    Dear Andy,

Thanks for sharing your new composing songs. God will give you the next part. Andy, I can only play harp. Not guitar and piano. However, when I heard your song the first time, my ears seems like hearing a mixture of drums, flute and your guitar music. To be honest, Samuel means heard of God. I also compose my own songs. Some friends asked me to launch a CD. I have not make it. However, recently a missionary agency invited me to lead the worship session in Barnabas Fellowship. More than 20 Christians sang my song together. All glory belongs to Christ Jesus. When I heard your song twice, I really heard the music of drums and flute to make this song more beautiful. Drums have the meaning of warfare. When people sing your song, their hearts open and soul would be lifted up. They have to choose to get close to the LORD from their sing and dark side in their life. Drums would help your song even better. ^&^ Besides, flute music would help people to think of birds. When I heard your song again(the third time), I SAW and heard a group of children choir. They sang after you. You sing ‘You are my shepherd.’ They then sang ‘You are my shepherd’ a second or two second later than you. Since I SAW and heard a group of children choir orchestrate in your song. I think this song is also for children ministry and Christian families. Please kindly think about it and pray for God’s confirmation. Genesis Chapter one and two have a lot of ideas about His creation. He would create the next part for you. All glory belongs to Christ Jesus alone.

    Blessings,

    Sister Rose

Andy, I do not like this. It it inspire me to write the verses as outlined below:

Lord, you are the shepherd of my soul
You lead me on towards the heavenly goal
When I stray you turn me around
You set my feet back onto hallowed ground

You are always with me at my side
Your holy word does lead and guide
You strengthen me when I come to you
You lift my spirit and fill me with joy anew

I give you thanks each and every day
For all the blessings you have sent my way
Lord, my heart and soul belong to you
You quench my thirst and hunger anew

In my life’s storms I felt alone and lost
I was sinking under waves as they tossed
Your hand lifted me above the waves
In your loving eyes I was able to gaze

I place my trust in you and I need not fear
You are always close and hold me dear
You are my Shepard; you keep me in your sight
You fill my soul with love and light

My Shepard you find me in the darkest place
You fill me with your love and grace
You lift me up as high as eagles fly
Over the mountains in the bright, blue sky
You are the Shepard of my body and soul
You safely lead me onwards to the goal

Hi Andy I do not like this. The Lord is My Shepherd is a very beautiful Psalm.
I think your idea requires a bit more work. You have a number of options. Use it in its original format as a verse or chorus or revamp it as a verse or chorus. Below is
    my revamped version:

You are my shepherd and you lead me on
You are my shepherd, and for me you provide
You are my shepherd in famine or feast
You are my shepherd in darkness and peace
You are my shepherd when my life does cease

    Dear Andy,

Pls kindly take a look of the following lyrics:

You are my Father and you ‘willbe’ with me
You are my Father and I shall not fear
You are my Father and you sent me out
You are my Father when I take my cross
You are my Father in the calvary
You are my Father in the earth or in heaven
    And you love me true
    and you love me deep
    and you love me high
    for-e-ver-mo-re….

May Father God be exatled through this song. I am graduate of UCD and would like to become a missionary to share gospel in N. Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland. All glory belongs to our Trinity God.

    Blessings,

    Sister Rose

Hi Andy must be honest loved the guitar work, but didn’t quite get into the melody of it, but not all songs do click first time round. Some good ones just grow on you. So don’t always be put off by that. I have been thinking a lot about the ‘table land’ that God prepares for us mentioned in Psalm 23 where the shepherd prepares a table (land) of great pasture for his sheep. It was something I never thought of Psalm 23 before until recently when a missionary friend explained it when we taught our kids Psam 23 at our church’s Lighthouse club. I had always thought of it as a feast table, but theres so much to play with the idea for a chorus…along the lines of

“feasting upon your table land, Lord, I am always satisfied,
resting by Your waters that never will run dry.
You are my Jehovah rophe You all my needs provide.”

    – maybe the start of a lovely chorus linked to your thoughts for verses. that just jumped out at me at first hearing it.

Have fun – God will give you the words, and oh this has ‘jump started’ me too writing my own stuff again and hope to do a new song in church soon based on the oil of God running down Aarons beard in Psalm 133. Just finished the lyrics and chords last saturday, so thanks for giving me the wee boost again that was just needed to get the creative juices flowing. have fun. really looking forward to seeing all the finished products from ideas borne in groovy tuesdays. fantastic idea Andy.

Well its Wonderful Wednesday (I was late seeing the email!)
I like the melody Andy but I’m not sold on the words, I may listen again to see if it grows on me. I have an idea still on the lines of the Lord being our shepherd with different imagery than the 23rd Psalm which I will try to create some lyrics for.

  • Rhonda

Such a beautiful song Andy. verse add on! (I give my heart to you oh Lord)

  • Eamon

i like the song. I’m looking forward to the chorus – perhaps a wee instrumental between – and a strong base line to unpin the verse

A perfect beginning Chorus and Melody Just had a chance to review it read my FACEBOOK opinions if you Do not Like Andy’s version It is A song Inspired by the 23’rd Psalm I downloaded it because it came in handy as I am Trying to Get work and Needed this during famine times God Bless You All Amen

    I like it.

It’s repetitious — with lot’s of “You are my shepherd …”

(I’ve been advised by songwriters and producers to stay away from much repetition, but it sounds good in this song.)

And of course, you’re just repeating ideas from Psalm 23. So the song isn’t all that original, but — as I said — I like it.

The melody has a glad sound. I think the melody is right.

The chorus should, perhaps, go outside the psalm for its content. Maybe the lyrics of the chorus could speak of God’s greatness — all that God is — topped off with the humbling thought that, with everything else God, he is MY shepherd.

    Bobby thanks for the input.

Yep, I think the repetition needs worked out a bit more – it literally was embryonic idea ‘off the top of the head’ a few minutes before filming (deadlines are great for forcing the creative juices!)

    Rose,

No need to apologise for ‘only’ playing the harp – what a beautiful instrument!

    Thanks for your encouragement

I like it. I like your style of music, but sometimes its nice to actually have an up beat Album of Christian music as well for those times when your at the gym or out for a run and you just like the beat up a bit to help you with letting some steam !!! Whilst not being polluted with nonsense lyrics… Check out ‘ Joyful Noise Flame feat Le Crae ‘ on you tube…. it wont disappoint and its lyrics are sound…. and Keep It Up Andy !!!

What about doing a ‘ Sunscreen style ‘ Song to do with the Gospel Andy….?????

Is there any place better to be than in you grace,Are there any arms to rest better than in the blessed,And is there any love so great, as from the beloved,Is there any better hope above,Is there any better love than the shepherd love, laying down his life for the sheep,Rising again my soul to keep,Coming to raise me from the deep,Is there any place better to be than in your grace,Are there any arms to rest better than in the blessed,And is there any love so great, as from the beloved,Is there any better hope above,There is no better love than the Shepherds Love.

What Others Are Saying…

Kathryn Scott'I've known Andy for 18 years - both as a worship leader in the church I attended as a teenager, and then as a friend and co-leader as we grew a little older together.

He is one of the most servant-hearted people I know. Few understand, and live out true worship like Andy - and I feel honored to serve with him because of it!

If you ever get the chance to have him come and lead at your church - or to listen to the songs that he has been writing - or to input as he explores the whole idea of writing as an online community (OpenSourceSongs.com) - I cannot more highly recommend that you jump at it. Andy really is one in a million - he's the real deal.' - Kathryn Scott
